Former President Donald Trump was the target of an alleged assassination attempt on September 15, 2024, while playing golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was identified as the suspect. He was spotted several holes ahead of Trump with an AK-47 rifle equipped with a scope and a mounted GoPro camera, reportedly intending to film the incident. Secret Service agents fired at Routh, who was hiding in shrubbery approximately 400-500 yards away from Trump. Law enforcement apprehended Routh shortly after the incident.
Routh’s background includes a history of political activism, with a focus on the war in Ukraine. He posted regularly on social media about his support for Ukraine and even traveled there in 2022. Despite his involvement, the Ukrainian Ground Forces Command confirmed that he never served in the Ukrainian military. Routh’s political views appeared mixed, with past support for Democratic candidate Tulsi Gabbard and, more recently, posts critical of Trump. Voter records show he was registered as an unaffiliated voter and made small donations to Democratic causes.

Routh also had prior run-ins with law enforcement, including a 2002 conviction in North Carolina for possessing a weapon of mass destruction after a standoff with police. His background and political motivations are under investigation by authorities as part of the ongoing investigation into the attempted assassination.
Local authorities reported that Routh was calm upon his arrest. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw noted that the golf course’s security was limited due to Trump no longer being the sitting president. However, Trump has been receiving heightened security following a July 2024 assassination attempt in Pennsylvania and ongoing threats to his life. In an email to his supporters, Trump confirmed that he was safe and thanked law enforcement and the Secret Service for their efforts.
The FBI is treating this incident as an attempted assassination, and Trump was expected to be briefed on the investigation by Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe. Trump continued his campaign schedule, expressing his gratitude to the Secret Service on social media, where he referred to the day as “interesting.”
Republican and Democratic leaders alike, including Trump’s running mate JD Vance and U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, expressed relief that Trump was unharmed. Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump’s Democratic opponent in the 2024 election, condemned the violence in a post on social media. President Joe Biden also expressed relief, reiterating that political violence has no place in the U.S.

This assassination attempt follows concerns about political violence during the 2024 election season, leading to a congressional bipartisan task force investigating the July 13 attempt on Trump’s life in Pennsylvania. The task force, led by Reps. Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Jason Crow (D-CO), is seeking a briefing from the Secret Service on both incidents, expressing their concern over the escalating threats to political figures. They emphasized the need for answers about both the Pennsylvania and Florida events.
Routh’s motivations remain unclear, and investigators are continuing to probe into his background, political views, and potential connections to extremist groups or foreign influences. His mixed political history, combined with his erratic behavior and prior convictions, has led law enforcement to consider multiple angles in their investigation.
As the election season continues, Trump remains a focal point for heightened security due to the ongoing threats against him. Despite these incidents, the former president has not announced any changes to his campaign schedule and remains an active candidate in the 2024 presidential race. He is expected to address his supporters and continue with campaign events as planned. Meanwhile, authorities continue their investigation into both assassination attempts, working to ensure the safety of all political figures during this volatile election period.
