An exorcist priest is cautioning against the use of Ouija boards and similar attempts to contact the deceased, emphasizing that “angels, demons, spirits, and souls exist and can influence our lives.”

Father Dan Reehil, a priest from the Diocese of Nashville, stresses the importance of recognizing the hidden aspects of our world that often elude our perception.

Fr. Reehil received exorcism training at the Ateneo Pontificio Regina Apostolorum in Rome in 2018 and was appointed as the resident exorcist in Nashville the same year. He defines an exorcist as a priest chosen and authorized by a bishop to carry out deliverance ministry, utilizing exorcism as a specific form of prayer against the power of evil.

According to him, a major exorcism is reserved for individuals demonstrably possessed by demons and can only be performed by a priest authorized by the bishop. He clarifies that a “minor exorcism” is associated with sacraments and blessings.

Fr. Reehil explains that demonologists classify demonic involvement into three levels: temptation, obsession or oppression, and possession. Temptation is a universal experience, while obsession involves physical, spiritual, mental, or emotional torment by demons. Possession occurs when a demon physically takes control of a person’s body intermittently, making use of their faculties.

The priest issues a stark warning about the use of Ouija boards, suggesting that it could lead to real-world consequences, including the risk of demonic possession. He asserts that demons deceive and impersonate the deceased, and using a Ouija board invites these entities into one’s life, even if the intention is benign.

While the Ouija board was initially conceived as a parlor game in the late 1800s, it is now produced by the toy company Hasbro, marketed as a means to communicate with the spirit world. However, Fr. Reehil firmly condemns viewing the board as a mere game, citing biblical references.

He emphasizes that Ouija boards should not be treated lightly and that they are a form of divination. Using them, he asserts, carries profound and uncontrollable spiritual consequences. Fr. Reehil claims to have witnessed six cases of demonic oppression resulting from Ouija board usage, with victims experiencing night terrors, suicidal thoughts, despair, and even physical harm.

He goes on to say that once deliverance prayers are offered, and participants renounce their involvement with the demons, the demonic activity ceases. Fr. Reehil advises against engaging with demons and encourages individuals to steer clear of occult practices, advocating a closer connection with God.
