Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, faced backlash after walking away from a reporter’s question on Sunday about his “reaction” to the tragic discovery of six Israeli hostages’ bodies, including an American citizen, found in a Hamas tunnel beneath Gaza. The incident took place at the Minnesota State Fair, where Walz was more focused on discussing local affairs than addressing the international crisis.

While mingling with fairgoers and sipping on a vanilla milkshake, Walz was asked about the change in atmosphere since the “last state fair” and how he was “balancing managing” his gubernatorial duties with his campaign for vice president. When a reporter pressed him for his response to the horrific news about the hostages, Walz chose to avoid the question entirely, simply stating, “Thanks, everybody!” and walking away as his supporters cheered, leaving many questioning his commitment to addressing serious global issues.

The brief interaction between Walz and the reporters unfolded as follows:

Reporter: “How much has changed from the last state fair?”

Walz: “The question was, how much has changed from the last state fair. I don’t get 12 days, which I normally get. A little bit more of a disruption, and I’m more concerned — obviously disruption to the other folks. But, it’s exciting. I think people are seeing that we’re getting to talk about Minnesota across the country, talk about the economy here, talk about things like the state fair, talk about agriculture.”

Another reporter: “How are you balancing managing the state of Minnesota and running for [vice] president?”

Walz: “I’ve got a good team on the – being able to manage my schedule. We appointed three great judges last week in Ramsey County, as you saw. Every night we go through all of the decision memos and meeting with the commissioners. I stay updated throughout the day and I’m in and out — most of my time is day out and then back in.”

When asked directly about his “reaction” to the gruesome discovery of six hostages’ bodies in Gaza, including U.S. citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Walz responded with a curt, “Alright, thanks everybody,” and walked away, offering no comment on the matter.

Walz’s refusal to address the question comes on the heels of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) identifying the murdered hostages as Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi, and Ori Danino. According to Ynet News, autopsies revealed the hostages sustained gunshot wounds to their heads and other areas, and showed signs of severe neglect and previous injuries, indicating systematic mistreatment during captivity.

While President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris quickly issued statements condemning the murders, with Biden vowing that “Hamas leaders will pay for these crimes” and Harris calling Hamas “an evil terrorist organization,” Walz remained silent, raising questions about his stance on the ongoing conflict in Gaza and his ability to handle such critical issues on the global stage.

As the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, Walz’s evasion has sparked criticism and concern among voters who expect decisive leadership and clear communication, especially in matters of international security and terrorism. His silence on the deaths of American citizens and Israeli allies only adds to the growing scrutiny of his candidacy.
